This is probably done to anticipate the lag when you play online, but it's nonetheless a little weird. First off, when you grab an item from the arena, there's like a two second delay before you can actually use that item. Now before you rejoice, there are some interesting gameplay changes and while the last Bomberman game I played was the all-time classic, Saturn Bomberman, I think most of these changes in Bomberman Online are pretty new. Bomberman Online doesn't slack in this department offering five different battle modes. Bomberman might be a decent one-player game, but it's all about battling other players, especially friends that owe you money, to the death by blowing up each other. That problem will be alleviated in our next preview when we get some online Bomberman action so stay tuned.Īlthough Bomberman Online has a pretty decent one-player mode, where our white wonder of a hero goes through several themed stages to protect the world from explosive evilness everywhere, let's face the facts here.
Although we were able to get online and check out the lobby and chat rooms, there weren't any players online. In each of the games, you can set the games per match, time limit, and random positioning. Currently, there were only two types of games you can select: survival (normal rules) and hyper Bomberman (spin-off of capture the flag concept). That leads this editor to believe Bomberman Online may have online games that feature up to eight players simultaneously! Although that's not the most in Bomberman history ( Saturn Bomberman allowed 10 players), eight players is still a monumental feat! In any case, once you get onto the Bomberman servers, you'll find the lobby setup is very similar to Daytona USA 2001. From what is shown, it looks like you can have up to four players jump online on the same Dreamcast. There are four basic areas that you can customize: head, eyes, body, and legs. Each collection panel unlocks several parts that you can to customize your own Bomberman.īefore you get online, you have to create a Bomberman character first, even if it's just a basic one. So long as you pick up that icon and win that round, you'll unlock one piece of the collection panel. If you do this, a unique icon will appear for you to collect. For example, the very first collection panel will tell you to lay a bomb in the bottom corner of the field within 20 seconds. Each one represents one of the 96 collection panels you can unlock and each will tell you exactly what you need to do in order to grab the collection icon.
That's where a lot of the fun begins with Bomberman Online where you can unlock a whole bunch of items to customize your very own Bomberman! In Normal Game mode, you'll go through several levels against computer opponents on your way to the boss but at the stage select, there will be four gray boxes. Not that it's hard to tell the difference between opposing Bombermen in the game, but with the only difference between your guy and the opponents being different colored costumes, it's pretty.
